Thursday, 12 August 2010 00:00
Presentation by Rick L Wright, P.E.
Principal Civil Engineer
Infrastructure Design Group
2534 State Street, Suite 308
San Diego, CA 92101
619.550.5465

The presentation begins with a discussion of common tunnel applications followed by case studies of local projects, each containing a variety of tunnel construction techniques including;
  • Conventionally mined tunnels (Roadheader and Drill & Blast)
  • Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM and EPBM)
  • Jack & Bore or Pipe Jacking
  • Microtunneling

A brief overview of each tunneling technique will be discussed, followed by construction photos demonstrating the application each respective method.

A photo-documentary of various tunneling projects completed in recent years will be presented to demonstrate the wide variety of projects in the local area.

Infrastructure Design Group provides Tunnel Design and Construction Management Services from the conceptual level through the preparation of contract documents. Developing a thorough, initial understanding of the vertical and horizontal subsurface conditions is essential to limit construction risk. Using geologic and subsurface data, alignments can be selected to minimize potential problems and maximize constructability.
