Stress and Autonomic Nervous System
Thursday, 09 June 2011 00:00
Presentation by Hiro Iwamoto

The autonomic nervous system is the part of the peripheral nervous system, regulating involuntary vital functions, such as the activity of the heart, stomach, lung, kidney, etc. It--s divided into two subsystems, the sympathetic nervous system, and the parasympathetic nervous system.

The sympathetic nervous system makes the blood pressure increased, heart beat faster, and digestion slowed down. The parasympathetic nervous system works in an opposite way.

The stress stimulates sympathetic nervous system, and in the long term, it causes blood clotting to increase and blood cholesterol levels to elevate increasing the risk of many diseases such as heart disease, stroke. The chronic stress also weaken the immune system.

Two important acupuncture points to reduce the stress will be demonstrated.
